The area around Trench 5 appears to have been a popular picnic area, as we found many late 19th and early 20th century artifacts. One of which was a bottle top shown in the two images above.
This brewing company in Barnard Castle was originally set up by George Carter. His two sons took it on after his death in 1906 as Carter Bros., whilst his widow carried on the mineral water side of the business.
George was from a big family. |
