In 2024 it was decided that we needed to have a new web site for Altogether Archaeology.
Our voluntary webmaster Stephen Eastmead wished to retire from the role. We owe Stephen a tremendous debt for his work in maintaining the website and associated database over many years. The website with its database links was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain so it was decided that the best approach was to build a new website on the popular WordPress platform which should be easier to maintain.
The new website which went live in December 2024 closely follows the model set up by Stephen. The intention was to move all the existing material across.
There are some changes which are detailed below which reflect the way that the group now manages its news items etc.
The main change is to the news items. As Facebook is now used extensively to display photos from excavations, walks, workshops etc there will be no new News items. However the existing items have all been downloaded and are accessible from this link.
The processed Lidar data created by Stephen Eastmead has all been moved across. Many of these were originally in tiff format which is a higher definition format but is not as accessible as it requires software that not all users will have. On Stephen’s recommendation the files have all been converted to .jpg format as the jpg algorithm has been much improved and produces very acceptable images.
Many of the photos from previous excavations had been removed from the previous website. These are in the process of being added to the photo gallery.
There is no longer a projects page but the items from there have been incorporated in other pages as follows:-
Cow Green project is on the AA (AONB) reports page as an update article.
Gueswick Hills 2020 research is on the photo gallery page
Gueswick Hills Excavation Oct / Nov 2019 is accessible from the Gueswick Reports Page
GPS survey of Holwick scars is available from Holwick 2018 blog page
Lost Roads on Hexham Fell is available as a download from the AA Other reports page
The Northumberland OS Name Book Project can be accessed from a button on the Activities page.
Well Head Deserted Settlement 2018 Excavation Blog items have been converted to a PDF document which is accessible from the Holwick Reports page
Finding your way around the site
The serious stuff can be found under the Reports Tab. This has all the detailed Excavation, Geophys and Survey reports to view or download.
The Research Framework has an overview of the archaeology of the area which is a useful introduction and has references to the many sites where the group has done work.
People interested in landscape archaeology will probably want to look at the Lidar Tab. Many of the images are also very beautiful.
Useful Documents such as AA_Excavation Recording Manual 2025, the Diggers’s Guide and the gnereic fieldwork risk assessment can be found on the governance tab
If you want to get an overview of what it is like to be a member of Altogether Archaeology there are several tabs. The Photo Gallery has lots of pictures from our many digs and walks. The Events Archive shows what we have been doing recently and the News Archive has activities and photos from the past few years. Newsletters are published twice a year and can be viewed or downloaded from that tab.
If you prefer to listen or watch rather than read look at the Videos & Podcasts tab.
The Activities tab shows what is coming up and is where we advertise our events and excavations.
The Links tab has links to many other local groups as well as to useful sites where you can find information about pottery, querns etc as well as placename information.
The HomePage has a search button so if you are interested in a particular site such as Long Meg enter that and it will display a list of the pages where that site is mentioned.
