Welcome to Altogether Archaeology

1) All events in the programme are free to members of Altogether Archaeology unless otherwise stated. For insurance reasons you must be a member to excavate, otherwise non-members are welcome to join us at all other events, subject to the availability of places. Please check in advance.  We ask non-members to make a voluntary donation using this link: Suggested amount per person = talks £3; walks & workshops £5.
2) Dogs – We regret that dogs are not permitted on any of our walks. Some walks cross private land (with the owner’s permission) and on access land we often need to leave public footpaths in order to visit archaeological sites.

Double Bill of Talks
12:30-13:50 Dr Jane Harrison Weaving and smelting: the story of an Early-Middle Anglo-Saxon site in the Coquet Valley, with later links to the Viking Great Army
This highly significant site near Felton, excavated in 2021-2023 – and again in 2026 – has Roman roots, is the location of an early Anglian weaving centre, settlement and then iron smelting site. Its location, communication links and history attract a group form The Viking Great Army before the site disappears from the archaeological record.

Double Bill of Talks and AGM
AGM 12:20-12:35

12:35-13:10 including Q & A
Myles Fairhurst “Stainton Village.”  Great Stainton is a quaint little village in County Durham. Its history is exciting and fascinating. From Roman to Medieval, from a demolished church to a disappearing windmill. To my knowledge the site has never been excavated or fully researched, this could be a rare opportunity to get involved and gain insight into Medieval villages in County Durham. Myles is hoping to drum up support and excitement for this project.
Lunch Break 13:10-14:00
14:00-15:30 Dr. Matti Holmes “Feeding Anglo Saxon England.” introduction to her work as a consultant zooarchaeologist with a case study based on her contribution to the FeedSax (Feeding Anglo Saxon England) project’

Double Bill of Talks
11:00-12:30 Lynne Roy ‘Microstratigraphic approaches to understanding roundhouse construction and settlement’. Lynne is a Geo archaeologist and project manager for AOC based in Edinburgh. Her talk will summarise work she has done on upland prehistoric roundhouse settlements in the Highlands and will relate what she has learned to the topography and level of survival on Altogether Archaeology’s own sites. She will compare lowland and wetland settlements to highlight potential data gaps in drier upland areas like Gueswicks, due to poorer preservation.
